What people say after their first year with an annuity

By Gregory Stevenson · 2 min read

I've been doing this long enough that I get to hear from people after they've lived with their decision for a while. The feedback I hear most often isn't about rates or returns. It's about how they feel. These are composite stories based on the kinds of conversations I have regularly — not specific individuals.

"I stopped checking my accounts every morning."

A retired engineer, 68, had been refreshing his portfolio app before breakfast for years. Once a portion of his savings was producing a predictable monthly income, the habit faded on its own. "The news doesn't scare me the same way," he told me. The money in the market was still in the market. It just wasn't the money he needed for groceries.

"We finally took the trip."

A couple in their early sixties had been postponing a long trip to see family overseas because spending felt irresponsible. When their essential expenses were covered by income that didn't depend on the market, spending from the growth bucket stopped feeling like a risk. They went. They're planning the next one.

"My wife knows the plan now."

One husband had always handled the money, and his biggest worry was what would happen to his wife if he went first. Setting up income that continues for her lifetime — and walking her through it in the same meeting — changed the conversation at home. "She can explain it to our kids," he said. "That's the part I didn't expect."

None of these people talk about caps or crediting methods a year later. They talk about sleeping, about spending without guilt, about their spouse understanding the plan. Those are the outcomes that actually matter.

If you'd like to see what a first year could look like with your own numbers, I'm glad to walk through it.
