"I don't want to lock up my money"

By Gregory Stevenson · 2 min read

One of the biggest fears I hear from people considering annuities is: "I don't want my money locked up where I can't touch it." That's a completely rational concern. So let me walk you through what "locked up" actually means — because it's usually not what people think.

First, the part people worry about.

Most deferred annuities have a surrender period — usually 5 to 10 years — where withdrawing more than the allowed amount triggers a charge. That's real. You should know the exact schedule before you sign anything.

Now the part that usually gets left out.

  • Free withdrawals. Most contracts let you take out up to 10% of the account value every year with no penalty. On $300,000, that's $30,000 a year you can reach.
  • Waivers. Many contracts waive surrender charges entirely for a nursing-home stay or a terminal diagnosis. The specifics vary by product, so it's worth reading that page.
  • A declining schedule. The charge is highest in year one and steps down every year until it reaches zero. After that, the money is fully yours to move.
  • Income was the point. If you set the annuity up to pay you monthly, the money isn't locked up — it's coming back to you on a schedule, which is what you bought it for.

The better question.

It isn't "can I get my money back?" It's "how much of my money truly needs to be reachable tomorrow?" For most people the honest answer is an emergency fund and a cushion — not every dollar they own. The portion that doesn't need to be liquid is the portion an annuity can do real work with.

If you want, we can look at your actual cash-flow needs together and find that number. It's usually smaller than people fear.
